Diagnostics and Amplification For Infants and Toddlers Workshop is being offered prior to the 2013 12th Annual Early Hearing Detection & Intervention (EHDI) Meeting
A.T. STILL University, Arizona’s Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) program and the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management (NCHAM) are partnering to offer an exciting training opportunity for audiologists. This training will enhance knowledge and skills in the assessment of hearing loss in infants and provide strategies to ensure appropriate amplification and intervention for infants and toddlers with hearing loss. The training combines 6 weeks of online preparation with a three-day on-site session emphasizing clinical procedures and hands-on practicum.

Hotel Information
Online Instruction: Required before attending on-site training
Weekly readings and case studies will increase theoretical and clinical knowledge. The reading list includes current related information regarding diagnostics, amplification and intervention for infants and young children. The suggested course textbook is the Objective Assessment of Hearing by Dr. James Hall, and De Wet Swanepoel. Additional reading material will be available on the website. Material will be discussed during weekly chat sessions with mentors. Questions may be posted on a web-based bulletin board. Participants will be required to successfully complete an online exam to measure their understanding of the background information after the chat room sessions have been completed.
Workshop Details
All participants will be asked to participate in a conference call prior to the start of the online instruction. During that call, you will be introduced to your online mentor and briefed on procedures for the online chats. Technical requirements for the online chats are a computer with Internet access, i.e. Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla or similar web browser, and willingness to participate. You DO NOT need to be a computer “guru” to be able to participate effectively in the online portion of this workshop.

Online Exam
The online exam will be available at the end of the week of April 1st, the week before the onsite workshop. Participants who are familiar with the material in the text and the readings and have participated in the chats should have no difficulty passing this exam.
Technical Assistance
You will be provided with a link and telephone number to assist you with any computer related problems or questions. Your online mentor may be contacted for questions regarding workshop content or materials.
On-site Instruction
Three days of clinically-based presentations by Dr. James Hall, Mr. Shane Moodie, Dr. Diane Sabo, Dr. Marlene Bagatto, Dr. Terry Foust, Dr. Karen Ditty, and Dr. Randi Winston. Hands-on experience with the clinical diagnostic equipment and amplification selection for infants will be provided.
Dr. James Hall will discuss:
- Timely, appropriate diagnosis.
- Anatomy and physiology of the infant auditory system.
- Electrophysiological results in pediatric clients.
- Otoacoustic emissions in pediatric clients.
- ABR—click and frequency specific measures.
- Bone conduction measures and use of sedation with infants.
Mr. Shane Moodie will discuss:
- Evolution and application of the DSL method.
- The importance of RECD in infant fittings.
- The use of ABR data in the DSL method.
- Validation of hearing instrumentation.
- Variables to consider in fitting amplification.
Dr. Diane Sabo will discuss:
- Behavioral assessment of infants & children.
- Cochlear implants for infants and children.
- Assisting parents in the decision making process.
Dr. Marlene Bagatto will discuss:
- Application of The University of Western Ontario Pediatric Audiological Monitoring Protocol (UWO PedAMP)
Dr. Ditty & Dr. Foust will discuss:
- Report writing & the EHDI system
Dr. Winston will discuss:
- Following up on Arizona’s babies and Arizona state reporting requirements
Hands-on Experience
Breakout hands-on sessions will afford you the opportunity to apply procedures discussed during the didactic sessions. Equipment specialists and mentors will be available to help guide you.
Practicum Experience
Each participant will be asked to complete diagnostic evaluations for three infants using the protocols presented in the course, and to submit a written report for each. Practicum mentors will read each report and provide helpful feedback. Participants and mentors will work together to arrange practicum situations that meet the participant’s individual needs.

This special opportunity is offered to you with financial support from A.T. Still University, The EAR Foundation of Arizona and the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management. Registration fee includes course materials, online preparation, and on-site training with breakfast, lunch and refreshment breaks each day.
Application has been made for American Academy of Audiology (AAA) Continuing Education Credits. This course will offer a total of 30 hours (.3 CEU’s) of continuing education credit. Application has also been made for Tier 1 CEUs
